How Do You Choose a Book Publishing Company?

Has anyone here worked with a book publishing company before? I’m researching different options, but it’s hard to tell which companies are genuinely supportive of authors and which ones to avoid. What factors matter most when choosing a publisher contract terms, marketing support, or editorial quality? Are smaller companies better for first-time authors, or do larger publishers offer more opportunities? I’d appreciate hearing real experiences, advice, or warnings before making a decision.

Choosing a publisher can feel overwhelming, and your post highlights all the questions many authors wrestle with. When I was preparing my first long-form piece and didn’t fully understand the landscape, I explored Last Minute Assignments thinking, rushing choices instead of weighing them carefully. From my experience, clear contract terms and fair royalties matter just as much as editorial quality, and many first-time authors benefit from a smaller press that offers hands‑on support before moving on to larger houses once they’ve built traction.
